王永志在1952年考入清华大学航空系飞机设计专业。1961年毕业于莫斯科航空学院。 1964年6月下旬，中国第一枚自行设计的导弹“东风-2A号”即将发射的时候。 “东风-2A号”导弹是一枚中近程火箭。当时，地处沙漠的酒泉发射基地的气温骤升，甚至高达40多摄氏度。众所周知，气温上升之后，火箭推进剂的体积就会膨胀，而且气化严重，燃料贮箱内所能容纳的火箭推进剂就会减少，导弹就达不到预定的射程，打不到预定的目标。怎么办呢？要加大火箭的推力，惟一的办法就是增加火箭推进剂。但是燃料贮箱的体积有限，装不下那么多火箭推进剂。 指挥部召开紧急会议，研究对策，虽然专家们谈了不少补救方案，但是都不合适。于是指挥部召开扩大会议，听取意见。32岁的中尉军官王永志也被“扩大”进了会议。 王永志在会上听到的都是如何增加火箭推进剂的方案，站起来发表截然相反的意见: “我主张应该泄出一些燃料，减少了导弹的重量，才能提高推力，加大射程。我经过计算，要是从火箭体内泄出600千克燃料，这枚火箭就会命中目标。” 王永志的意见，遭到了众人的反对。火箭不能命中目标明明是推进剂不够，怎么可以再往外泄掉推进剂呢？王永志知道钱学森正在酒泉基地，便鼓起勇气敲开了钱学森的门。钱学森仔细倾听这个小伙子的意见，马上说“有道理”。钱学森马上把火箭的总设计师请来，指着王永志对总设计师说:“这个年轻人的意见对，就按他的办！” “东风-2A号”果真提高了射程，命中了目标。 由于钱学森的举荐，王永志在1986年担任“863计划”载人航天工程研究组组长。1992年11月15日，中央军委正式任命王永志为中国载人航天工程总设计师。 Source: http://mitbbs.com/article_t/Military/58921507.html
