A doctor has gone viral for revealing she was uninvited to a close friend’s wedding simply because she’s a healthcare worker during COVID-19

Last week, Dr. Emily Long shared a video to TikTok, venting her frustrations to viewers following an exchange with the bride-to-be. In the video, which has gained more than 4.7 million views, Long said she was ready to fly to her home state of Texas from Boston, Mass. following a 28 hour shift as a plastic surgery resident.

According to Long, she had spent “thousands of dollars” on pre-wedding events and was planning on utilizing her “limited” vacation time to attend. Things took a turn when Long contacted her friend to confirm details of the trip, resulting in the bride rescinding her invitation.

“When I texted her this morning to let her know that I was being tested and taking all these precautions before I flew in an attempt to make her feel comfortable, she totally freaked out when she found out that I take care of sick people,” Long said before adding sarcastically, “Who would have thought that a doctor takes care of sick people? I don’t know.”

Long ended her video by telling viewers that her presence would the bride “and other people” feel uncomfortable, adding that she was left with a non-refundable flight to Texas.

The video struck a chord with TikTok viewers, who called Long’s friend “a hypocrite” for uninviting her while still choosing to get married during a pandemic.

“Having a wedding in Texas and being concerned about COVID do not go in the same sentence,” one viewer wrote.

“How nervous could she really be?” another person asked. “She’s having a wedding in Texas.”

Others told Long similar stories of feeling ostracized from events because they or someone in their household works in healthcare.

“My daughter is an EMT and our whole family was uninvited to events,” one person wrote. “Yet she’s the very person that would take care of them in the emergency room.”

“My best friend of many years and I stopped being friends because she was so scared of me during the pandemic because I worked with COVID patients,” another said.

“I’m so sorry, I can see the hurt. I have a similar story,” a woman told Long. “I flew to a wedding with my husband, who was the best man and we weren’t allowed in the ceremony. “

“Isn’t it funny how last year, doctors and nurses were all heroes (which they are), but this year they are looked at as villains,” added another.

“That’s just f—-ing cruel,” someone else chimed in. “So last minute, and she knew you were working in the medical field the whole time anyway.”

In a follow-up video, Long revealed that she chose to cancel her flight in exchange for flight credits, and chose to stay at work instead.

“I am working because I have a commitment to my job and to my patients and to my program to — you know — be a professional,” she said.
