TEACHING VALUES

  • As a classically trained musician of 40 years, my whole life has been dedicated to learning and teaching music. Throughout my 20+ years of teaching, my main goals have been to transfer my appreciation for music to my students and help them reach their potential in life.
  • My job is to impart my love for music in my students but the most important thing to me is their happiness and well-being. I take mental health very seriously and I have always strived to nurture my students’ minds in addition to their musical capabilities.
    • The success of my students stems from the confidence and happiness they attain from excelling in their clarinet studies.
  • I believe individual people respond better to certain teaching styles, so I strive to adapt my teaching strategies to fit each student’s specific needs.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

Mrs. Su’s class has greatly advanced my skills as a musician over the last nine years. She has been an invaluable help as I prepared for my All-District audition each year and allowed me to confidently play solos in my school’s band. Without her, I could not have made the All-Virginia Band this year. The practice techniques Mrs. Su teaches make even the hardest pieces and most complex melodies achievable; after a few repetitions according to her instructions, I’m shocked at how well I can play. I have also learned much more than how to play the clarinet. I have learned not to be daunted by difficult problems or great challenges, but to break them down step by step, working on each part until it is perfect. In Mrs. Su’s class, I have achieved things I never thought I would be able to do at first glance. She is such a warm and friendly person, and her lessons and advice continue to give me confidence both in music and in life.

I’ve been taking clarinet lessons with Ms. Su for 4 years. I’ve been quite busy throughout high school, but the clarinet was always an avenue for me to relax and enjoy music. Even though I don’t play the clarinet competitively, I’ve enjoyed every single minute I practice and every single note I play. I can confidently say that Ms. Su is one of the reasons I’ve had this hobby for so long. My success is a reflection of her dedication towards her students. She is always accommodating and understanding, and goes out of her way to help me improve. Thanks for the 4 years!

Clarinet lessons taught me a lot of things and made me much better at the clarinet. I never had much of a problem reading the sheet music, since I’d played piano for a few years already. However, before I started clarinet lessons at the end of 7th grade, I only knew a few scales and the lower half of the chromatic scale. The first thing I learned after starting lessons was the proper embouchure. I also learned all the other major scales and improved my high notes and chromatic scale, which was the reason why I was placed in the highest band for Kilmer MS in 8th grade (from the third-highest band in 7th grade) and the highest band for TJ in 9th grade, where there were only a few freshmen. Finally, I really liked the annual concert, where I could listen to all the other students perform. When I was younger, it was really cool to hear the older students play incredibly fast or technically demanding pieces.
