REGIONAL AND NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR TEENS

Receiving an accolade from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards — the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens — is no small feat.

Here at VSA Future, our writing students have earned 26 such distinctions over three years, including 4 regional Gold Medal winners and one national Silver Medal winner. We’re proud of their stunning accomplishments, and we believe our students are more than capable of continuing a strong showing in next year’s competition.

VSA SCHOLASTIC PREPARATION WORKSHOPS

We’re pleased to offer a virtual evening workshop this summer to help students hone their craft and develop strong written pieces that can stand on their own in next year’s Scholastic Awards. Our Scholastic Writing Award Workshop will guide students through developing sophisticated writing to be entered into the award’s various categories, which include genres ranging from personal and critical essays to poetry and short fiction.

Though students will be professionally guided through the writing and submission process by our experienced teachers here at VSA Future, we note that this is a supplemental program for students with a deep passion for and dedication to writing. We cannot guarantee that participants of the program will be recognized for their entries by the Scholastic judges. Our course serves as a valuable resource for avid students with a flair for writing, as the contest allows students to submit multiple entries across genres.

VSA SCHOLASTIC WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

In the workshop, students take a monthly or semimonthly class with a VSA teacher. Each workshop focuses on a particular skill and how it applies to different genres. Students will develop one complete piece of writing in that genre during the month, with two rounds of feedback and revisions.

ABOUT SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards was founded in 1923 and has since recognized the talents of millions of students across the country. Scholastic Art and Writing Awards offers students in grades 7–12 the opportunity to showcase their artistic and literary talents in a variety of categories, including poetry, short stories, journalism, photography, and more.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards include scholarships for higher education tuition and summer enrichment programs. These awards serve as significant achievements for college applications and resumes.

WHAT MAKES AN AWARD-WINNING ESSAY?

Check out the critical essay “Blonde,” written by a VSA 9th grader, which won a Scholastic Gold Key.

SENSORY DETAILS ARE VERY IMPORTANT!

The essay delves into the song “White Ferrari” by Frank Ocean, exploring how the writer interacts with the music and how their reaction evolves over time. The piece is structurally innovative, flipping back and forth between “inward” personal reflections and “outward” critical analysis.

The writer focuses on sensory details that bring both the music and the writer’s response to the song to life. “I noticed myself floating, as I closed my eyes, letting the water hit my head repeatedly. I felt light. Euphoric,” they write as they give the song a second chance one day in the shower.

Exploring their personal reaction to the song, the writer describes their initial distaste giving way to newfound insights into love gleaned from the song. Those insights are drawn from the “outward” analysis, as the writer probes their own discomfort with and detachment from the song, exploring its lyrics, structure and themes. The writer takes other risks, like addressing the artist directly, which pay off as the essay reaches its conclusion: “Hearing this song and listening to the lyrics thrusts me into a new reality . . . The lyrics are beautifully universal, such that any person . . . can place themselves within the song and interpret it their own way.”
