2023 SCHOLASTIC WRITING CONTEST NOW OPEN

School bells ring, leaves turn color and fall, writing contests for students open up for submissions — it’s that time of year again! VSA Future is proud to champion our writing students’ successes, and this contest season is no exception.

CONGRATULATIONS VSA WINNERS!

In the last two years, VSA writers have taken home several distinctions — including 1 National Silver Medal winner, 3 Regional Gold Medal winners, 3 Regional Silver Medal winners, and 8 Honorable Mention winners. Those are remarkable numbers: for example, in 2021, the contest saw 230,000 entries, with just 0.8% chosen as winners.

WHY ENTER?

Winners can see their hard work and creativity recognized by skilled judges who work in the industry. They can attend ceremonies and earn thousands of dollars in scholarships and cash awards. On top of that, it’s a great accomplishment to have for college applications, resumes and more that speaks to your child’s talent.

SUBMIT TO 11 CREATIVE CATEGORIES

This time around, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers has many creative categories open for submissions. On the writing front, students can enter in 11 different categories, including Critical Essay, Flash Fiction, Journalism, Personal Essay & Memoir, and Short Story. Follow this link for more guidelines on each category and how to enter (submissions are $10 per entry).

The Scholastic judges evaluate each category individually, so students who submit more entries in different categories have a greater chance of recognition. VSA recommends that students submit as many qualified entries as they want; many VSA students have been recognized for multiple works in the same year. Seniors in high school are encouraged to submit portfolios.

Luna, my darling

I look at the stars and thank them for making the moon happy

For letting her shine in the sky

And perform her ever-changing dances on the stage

And being quiet in the background

And letting her beauty be seen.

I look at the clouds and thank them for making the moon happy

For letting her rest when she’s tired

And covering her with fluffy blankets when she’s cold

And letting her wear their white silky dresses when she doesn’t like hers.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For the 2023 awards, submissions are due later this winter, in early December.

Students must be 13 years or older by the submission deadline.
