In Reading & Writing, Math, Public Speaking, and more, VSA has developed a rigorous curriculum for students in grades 2–11, with over 10 class levels that build on each other.
- VSA Vision: Train well-rounded students with integrated knowledge
- Spiral Learning Method: Students continually use their skills as building blocks

SUNSHINE CLASSES (GRADES 1–2)
Our 1st and 2nd Grade classes are specially designed to keep our youngest students learning and laughing! Our early education teachers keep students focused with fun songs, activities, and visually engaging slides. Students practice letter formation and writing on personal whiteboards and notebooks.
ENGLISH (GRADE 1)
In English, our youngest students build foundational language skills in phonics, reading, spelling, and grammar during classes tailored for age-appropriate virtual learning. Through teacher modeling, peer collaboration, and guided and independent practice, students:
- Build phonics skills in vowel sounds, consonants, blends, and digraphs
- Read decodable books to practice fluency and reinforce phonics skills
- Practice comprehension strategies to identify story and picture elements, plot, characters, and setting
- Study parts of speech and grammar conventions
READING & WRITING (GRADE 2, CW)
Students become excellent readers and creative writers in G2 RW. They study an array of literary genres and practice the writing process, from outlining to revising. Students practice their handwriting while producing written pieces.
In Math, our youngest students build foundational skills in early math, including number and pattern recognition, geometry, measurement, and problem-solving skills. Students study base-ten notation, place value, addition, and subtraction, and they gain fluency in solving multi-step word problems.
Our two-hour class incorporates grammar, reading comprehension practice, and writing units to teach students the tools to express themselves on the page. Students approach writing with a critical eye as they move through the writing process. Teachers offer detailed feedback on each draft, and students become adept at making substantive revisions to produce polished essays.
GRAMMAR AND READING COMPREHENSION
- Craft complex yet clear sentences with a confident grasp on grammar
- Enrich writing with literary and rhetorical devices
- Identify point of view, setting, plot, themes, and figurative language
- Use signal words for comparisons and contrasts
- Interpret supporting evidence
ESSAY WRITING
In each essay unit, students study mentor texts to understand the style and conventions of a broad array of essay genres:
Opinion writing: Learn how to form and defend an argument with compelling evidence
Literary analysis: Through close study of texts, craft in-depth analyses of themes, character development, and figurative language
Informative essays: Conduct research and synthesize sources to clearly and engagingly present information, evidence, and conclusions
Narratives: Write myths, legends, and historical fiction with a firm grasp on plot, setting, and character
MATHEMATICS (GRADES 3–6)
In weekly classes, students integrate a rigorous foundation in math principles with problem-solving skills, data analysis, and mathematical thinking. Our Common Core–aligned lessons are designed to engage students through discussions, engaging activities, and collaborative problem solving.
Engaging & Interactive Lessons
Each math class features interactive lessons paired with guided and independent practice. Students begin with Fast Math Facts to improve fluency and mental math strategies, before moving on to the interactive lesson.
Individualized feedback
During practice, students apply their math concepts in online problems that adapt to each student’s level—ensuring that everyone proceeds at their own pace. Teachers receive real-time diagnostics and provide individualized feedback and support.
PRE-ALGEBRA (GRADES 6–8)
The comprehensive, year-long Pre-Algebra curriculum equips students with the knowledge and practice they need to be ready for Algebra. The unit structure creates a cohesive narrative, with direct instruction on topics ranging from ratios and proportions to algebraic equations and inequalities. Additional practice on a wide range of math skills prepares students for high school-level work. Unit assessments and periodic exams monitor student progress and growth.
ALGEBRA I (GRADES 7–9)
Our advanced, year-long Algebra I class complements our Pre-Algebra program. Encompassing skill sets and standards for the late middle school and early high school years, the curriculum begins with a review of pre-algebra concepts before diving into multi-step and linear equations. By the end of the year, students become adept at polynomials, quadratic equations, and rational and radical expressions. Each class features direct instructions paired with guided and independent practice to help students be ready to pursue higher-level math courses in high school and beyond. Unit assessments and periodic exams monitor student progress and growth.
VOCABULARY (GRADES 4–8)
A rich vocabulary can enliven a student’s writing, improve their communication skills, and enable them to articulate their ideas clearly and effectively. With a wide range of words, students can craft compelling essays with precise details and nuanced arguments by varying their language. VSA Vocabulary offers an engaging and new way of studying vocabulary that brings language to life.
Instead of just memorizing spelling and definitions, vocabulary becomes alive and integrated into the students’ real-life experiences. The class learns to use Greek and Latin roots to categorize unfamiliar words based on its function and part of speech, and they build connections to other age-appropriate vocabulary based on word roots. Studying word roots opens children’s eyes to new words, making vocabulary mastery easier, faster, and more enjoyable.
Guided group activities, independent practice, and homework assignments in sentence usage build a solid foundation in each unit. Interactive slides, vivid storytelling, and creative writing practice with new vocabulary makes each lesson a class to remember!
In our Public Speaking course, students project their voices, make eye contact, and make their presence known, whether in person or through the computer screen. Our innovative course teaches students to effectively argue a strong stance, be persuasive, and hold an audience rapt with any topic they choose.
By studying famous speeches and writing original talks, Public Speaking students:
- Hone speaking fluency and articulation
- Build stage presence by practicing eye contact and focusing on posture and body language
- Adjust their speaking pace to keep audiences engaged
- Write weekly speeches on wide-ranging topics, from the serious—distance learning, cybersecurity, and scientific discoveries—to the light-hearted—vacations, favorite books and films, and how-to lessons.
- Dig deep into topics, gathering sources of information to support claims
- Organize research and arguments into clear, effective speeches
- Receive peer and teacher feedback on each speech
- Give constructive feedback to their peers
